Massachusetts State Combined Food Stamp Application Project (CAP)

("Program aims to boost disabled seniors' food stamp use, Debit-like cards will be sent out," Boston Globe, June 23, 2005)

As part of the Bay State Combined Application Project, or CAP, the state will send electronic food stamp cards to 30,000 elderly, disabled recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits automatically in the mail. Another 38,000 disabled seniors will be eligible for the program at the end of the summer. Future recipients will be able to enroll in the Food Stamp Program at the time they apply for SSI, without separate applications or long lines. The project is part of an effort by the state to boost its participation rate in the Food Stamp Program, which is the lowest in the nation with only 39 percent of eligible persons receiving assistance. According to Patricia Baker, policy analyst for Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, disabled seniors tend to miss applying for food stamps because of fear of the process and stigma.

National Educational Computing Conference

I am volunteering at the NECC (National Educational Computing Conference) conference at the Convention Center, June 27-30, 2005. They expect 15,000 educators and technology vendors in Philly. The NECC deals with the use of technology in education. I will be at the Information Booth. On Saturday, I was at the Philadelphia Airport to greet some of the attendees. The most frequent asked question was: "Where is the restroom?"

Cheap Gas

You can search for your area's cheapest gas by clicking on the above link.

The web site blends Google Maps with data from Gasbuddy.com's database of prices at individual gas stations -- very cool.

I'm Back!

I 'm back in the saddle again -- OK, it's really just the living room chair -- and resuming household chores.

It will take a little time to settle down again (unpack boxes of glass, picture frames, etc.). The house has been completely painted, along with the tiling of the first floor.

Have a great week.
