James A. Michener Art Museum

On Thursday, August 24, 2006, we went to the James A Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA. We saw an exhibit: "Show Business: Irving Berlin's Hollywood," which was very interesting. Berlin worked with Jolson, Astaire, Crosby, Merman, Garland. He wrote complete scores to about 20 movies, from the Jazz Singer to The Polar Express. When Berlin started writing songs, the home entertainment center was the piano. The exhibit is through September 3, 2006.

We also saw "Witness" by Todd Stone, watercolors on paper. Todd Stone has been painting in Tribeca since 1974. He has a studio six blocks away from the North Tower of the WTC. He had a camera set up since 9-10-01 documenting the downtown skyline, a practice of many years. He was on a neighboring roof when the south tower collapsed. He took photos through 9-21-01. From these photos he painted what he saw. If you have a chance, check it out. The Mercer Museum is across the street. We plan on visiting that soon.

Philadelphia ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 2006 SUMMER TOUR

Yesterday, I was a guest at the Philadelphia Antiques Roadshow summer tour held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center here in Philly.

Over 5,000 people attended this event with over 10,000 antiques! It was a fantastic experience. We arrived around 8:00 AM and waited in line marked by yellow tape. As we snaked in line, we met other people and spoke with them about their items and stories. One of the people in line had found a broken chair in the trash -- later we learned that it was worth $48,000!!

After being in line for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, we went to the triage table. The appraisers at the triage table looked at my items and assigned a category and gave me a item ticket for each piece -- one for a silver box (Silver) and another for my 1960 Students for Kennedy and Johnson , West Chester State College, campaign "thank you note" signed by John F. Kennedy (Collectibles). They had 25 categories and over 75 appraisers working the event. I saw, among others, the Keno brothers (furniture experts) and Noel Barrett (toys expert).

A volunteer took me to the "on the set" appraiser, and I waited in line for another hour or two at the appraiser table for my items. On the set, I saw a woman with a beautiful Indian blanket and an appraiser being taped for a future show.

After my second appraisal, I made my way to the exit. WHYY TV took my picture with the JFK signed letter.

The Philadelphia event will be the basis for three episodes to be aired beginning in January 2007. For more information, go to http://www.pbs.org/antiques

The next Antique Roadshow summer tour will be in Honolulu, HI, on August 26.

P.S. The JFK letter was signed by his secretary, and the silver box`was silver plate.

Movie Preview: World Trade Center

Last night at the Ritz East, Sansom Street Walkway between Front and 2nd, we saw a sneak preview of the World Trade Center. It is about the last two survivors extracted from Ground Zero. It's a very personal, human story, directed by Oliver Stone.

I highly recommend it!

Great Idea: National Firefighters Day

An idea from the son of a 9/11 firefighter...

This is from a boy who lost his father on September 11th. He's got a really great idea.

Thanks! Hello, I lost my Dad on September 11th; he was Chief Edward Geraghty, Battalion 9, New York City Fire Department. He lost his life with many other heroes That day, victims of the terrorists. Firefighters from all over have come to the aid and Rescue of the tragedy in New York and Washington, D.C. Many firefighters lost their lives to save someone else's. The truth of the matter is, they do this every single Day. They truly are heroes. I know many people feel Helpless, especially those who live far from NYC and D.C. We all want to do something to show our Appreciation, our support! I think we can... In honor of the bravery, courage and determination of American firefighters, there should be a day in our Nation to celebrate and appreciate their hard-work and Never-ending passion for saving lives. I think we Should honor all those other heroes who still live Today. I'm starting a petition for a National Firefighters Day. Will you help make every September 11th "National Firefighters Day"? Please join me! Thank you, Connor Geraghty, age 14, Rockville Centre, New York (I Love U, DAD!!)

PS: When this list reaches 500 names, please send it Back to me at ceg8587@aol.com Instructions: COPY AND PASTE INTO A NEW MAIL... ADD YOUR NAME TO THE BOTTOM...Send it to all you know.

Movie Preview: Boynton Beach Club

Last night at the Ritz Five, 2nd & Walnut, we saw a sneak preview of the romantic comedy "Boynton Beach Club," starring Dyan Cannon, Brenda Vaccaro, Joseph Bologna, Renee Taylor, Sally Kellerman, Len Cariou, Michael Nouri and Mal Z. Lawrence. It is directed by Susan Seidelman.

The plot revolves around five single seniors living in an Adult Community in Boynton Beach, Florida. There lives intersect when they meet at a bereavement group where they have gone to find emotional support after the loss of a loved one. But soon they each find themselves on an unexpected journey when they revisit the "dating game" after many decades of married life.

It is a terrific movie. Don't miss it.
